FAQ (NATURE VS. CULTURE)&#38;nbsp;
most of these words were written on my phone whilst hiking barefoot on an empty stomach&#38;nbsp;
I am not in search of the perfect moment.&#38;nbsp; im suspicous of most images.&#38;nbsp; im seduced by images.The work begins in not-knowing. That unresolved tension, that refusal to land on an answer, is not a problem to be solved but the point itself. Mystery is the entry point
I use photography to create new worlds within my perceived reality, to ask questions about memory, photography, and its representation and re-presentation.I work with both analogue and digital tools, and I also use the clone stamp and the lasso tool.Rather than merely capturing emotion, I aim to evoke an emotional response in the viewer that feels strangely familiar. A kind of alchemy, a trompe l’oeil, a Brechtian making strange.My work does not follow a linear series. It is one continuous and interwoven body of work, like a conversation that never stops. Ideas shift over time, older themes return, and new ones appear.I am not only interested in what lies in front of the camera. I am equally drawn to what lies behind, beneath, and to the side of the frame.
Good ideas matter more to me than sharp or colourful or pretty pictures.Photographs should rarely need text to support them, although that itself may be untrue.I am guided by the basic tenets of Gestalt theory: proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, and connectedness.I follow gut feelings through my one right eye. (unreliable evidence)I use video, photography and painting in conversation with each other.
My influences include Michael Schmidt, Roe Ethridge, John Divola, Thomas Ruff, John Gossage, Lucas Blalock, and Robert Cumming An image made with a smartphone is as meaningful as one made on large format or with a potato pinhole camera.I knew all of this before, but I lacked the language to express it.I am interested in sculpture and form, but my main concern is transformation, the moment when a thing becomes something else through the camera.My work can be read as a sampler of photographic genres. Portraits, landscapes, nudes and still lifes sit together to reveal the medium and its limitations.The only part of my process that I truly value is intellectual curiosity expressed through experimentation. Strategy over certainty.If I ever begin to know exactly where the work is going, I will stop.This is an ode to effort.
My work lives inside my body. Mind, body and technology.I use what I find lying around and convert this debris into a theatrical mise en scène through a form of creative alchemy.This urban flotsam and jetsam carries its own knowledge and its own built-in aesthetic, which I unearth and explore in my constructions.I try to surprise myself, to make unsolvable pictures that I have not seen before, and to get beneath the surface.I trust the indecisive moment.Like music, it operates below language, in the space where meaning is sensed before it is understood.

I believe in the power of the single image, but I am increasingly interested in the patterns and associations that appear when images are sequenced in a book or on a wall.In a time when the internet is overwhelmed by slick and generically stunning AI images that cause visual fatigue, I sense the rise of a counter image. The idea of photography as a truthful index of reality is dissolving.What is an image of, when anything can be faked? Does subject matter even matter?A lo-fi Polaroid of your untattooed lover may one day feel more radical than a billion midjourney hallucinations.The near future of photography feels post gloss, grainy and unpolished, tactile, raw, and full of error. Embedded work such as film, damaged negatives, timestamped chaos. Work that asserts presence.Make more than you complain

	Nature vs CultureI work with photography as a space of uncertainty, transformation, and experiment. My practice moves between photography, collage, sculpture, painting, and moving image, using analogue and digital tools, found materials, staged forms, and improvisation to construct images that resist easy interpretation.

Rather than treating photography as a medium of description, I approach the image as a mutable object. I build temporary structures from discarded materials, domestic objects, plants, textiles, painted surfaces, and printed photographs, then photograph, manipulate, scan, crop, and reassemble them. The camera becomes less a witness than a participant in a physical performance. The resulting works occupy an unstable territory where abstraction and representation continually exchange places.

I have never been interested in the single decisive image. My work develops non-linearly, with photographs, collages, sculptures, videos, books, and installations feeding into one another over time. Images migrate across different forms and contexts, accumulating meaning through repetition, variation, and interruption. A photograph may become a sculpture, a sculpture may become a video, a video frame may return as a collage, and the cycle continues.

The central tension in my work is between nature and culture—between organic growth and human systems of order, manufacture, categorisation, and control. I am drawn to moments when ordinary things begin to lose their certainty: a flower becomes a gesture, a piece of plastic becomes a landscape, a curtain becomes a horizon, a photograph becomes an object among other objects. These transformations are not symbolic so much as experiential; they ask the viewer to remain with ambiguity rather than resolve it.

At a moment of visual fatigue, AI-generated perfection, and growing uncertainty about what an image can be trusted to show, I am interested in the opposite: error, materiality, friction, and play. I want images to retain the evidence of their making, their instability, and their capacity to become something other than themselves. Photography, for me, is not a fixed document of the world but a living surface through which perception, memory, performance, and imagination continually reorganise reality.

Nico Krijno (b. 1981, Cape Town, South Africa) is an artist working across photography, collage, sculpture, and moving image. With a background in theatre, experimental video, and filmmaking, he began developing his visual arts practice in the late 2000s, treating photography not as a recording device but as a material process through which objects, gestures, colour, and performance could be continually reconfigured.
Working at the intersection of analogue and digital image-making, Krijno constructs ephemeral arrangements from found materials, domestic objects, natural forms, painted surfaces, and printed photographs, which are then photographed, manipulated, scanned, cropped, and reassembled. His practice resists fixed categories, moving fluidly between photography, collage, sculpture, installation, and film, and exploring how meaning emerges through accumulation, chance, repetition, and transformation.
His work has been presented internationally at venues including the Henie Onstad Triennial for Photography and New Media, PHOTO Melbourne, Images Vevey, and galleries in Amsterdam, London, New York, Los Angeles, and Cape Town.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Solo exhibitions include The Constellation (The Ravestijn Gallery, Amsterdam), The Fluid Right Edge (The Ravestijn Gallery, Amsterdam; Beetles + Huxley, London), Leave Your Body Behind (Elizabeth Houston Gallery, New York), and New Gestures: Fabricated to be Photographed (WHATIFTHEWORLD, Cape Town).
Krijno was selected for Foam Talent in 2016 and was nominated for the Paul Huf Award in 2015. His work has been featured by Aperture, British Journal of Photography, LensCulture, It’s Nice That, and other international publications. He has published the artist books New Gestures (2016), The Fluid Right Edge (2017), How to Leave Your Body Behind (2019), and the forthcoming monograph MURK (Witty Books, 2026).
He lives and works just outside Cape Town, South Africa.

	Nico Krijno is an artist who explores photography, at the intersection of collage, painting and video Probing the boundaries of each, resulting in unique abstractions: &#38;nbsp; An intertextual dialogue opens up between his artworks, and allows for a surprising tone to the assemblage. Krijno describes the process of photographing these ephemeral structures as a private physical performance, with the camera being the audience.
Often working with discarded found materials, he interprets and re-organises them in a non-linear manner in the pursuit of finding alternative structures for how meaning and matter are constructed and perceived. Using his body and movements based on gestural abstraction, creating a direct link between the body and the natural flow. Re-introducing a dynamic relationship with nature, bringing nature back into the world in reaction against the man-made- manufacturing process

With a filmmaking background, working in the theatre and experimental video fields both as video editor &#38;amp; cameraman.&#38;nbsp; Nico Krijno switched camps to the field of visual arts around 2008. His photographic practice with its focus rooted in process and experimentation is realised in a variety of media, formally and technically diverse. combining analogue and digital and cameraless tools resulting in participatory installations, sculptural interventions, video+sound He has exhibited work across Europe, Asia and the US, and worked for major brands like&#38;nbsp; Givenchy, Caron, Loewe, Kartell

What we are going through now has happened beforewhat we are looking for is perhaps already inside usAs humans we live and die in the context of the stories we tell ourselves about the world and our place in it
 
Two great stories happen at the same time 
the great drama of the world and the unique stories trying to unfold from each individual soul at this critical time on earth something essential from the story of the world is trying to be rediscovered and something crucial in each life story is trying to be revealed through myths of re:creation we can touch the timeless images and archetypes from which the living world first arose and find inspiration and insights into collective transformation on earth

timekeeping&#38;nbsp;The origins of timekeeping are sundials(sundials are not effective after sundown)
So the original ‘keeping of time’ only happened at daylight and at the end of each day - time would disappear the darkness would come and people would understand that eternity had come back, and so one of the things we have lost in the modern world is this vision, this view that connects us at the edge of our knowing with nature and with the world behind nature the world behind the world (i dont want to use the word cosmos here)(last impressions last)And another thing we have lost is the connection to timelessness In other words people are always running out of time &#38;nbsp;But it isn't more time that we need but its more timelessness In order to feel the depth of creation that is always present and in order to get a new view of the world Its not simply that we need a better world, but we need a better view of the world 
So it's natural for humans as part of human nature to be stretched between the heavens and the earth below our feet To be stretched between eternity and everything that is time boundThat's part of the inner tension of being a human being Because we are suppose to become conscious of things that are beyond our normal grasp (transcend)
We are supposed to be in the course of our life in the growing of the life 
that's trying to unfold within each of us supposed to get greater insights and intuitions about the things that are not obvious in the world (the field)
And when we lost that kind of ‘sense’ that humans are stretched between time and eternity, that we are children of the heaven as well as born from the earth

︎︎︎video made in 24hrs in and around my studio as an ode to effortIn the Cave of the Lotus Eater is an immersive video that captures a moment oftransition: the moment when the photographer leaves the place where he once lived.Made spontaneously over a 24-hour period, this short film evokes the way in whicheach image fixes a precious memory before it is erased.The film is an ode to effort, a self-portrait and a reflection on memory. It shows howthe landscapes we pass through continue to live in us, even after we have left them.
